block internet access via password

Question

i want to block internet on my computer via a password, similar to what this product can do, but without paying or pirating: http://download.cnet.com/Internet-Password-Lock/3000-2092%5F4-10504020.html

i can't simply change the network password because the computer stores the password if it connects...

using windows vista.

Enable Parental Controls on that account. Create another account with a more secure password. Use the latter for surfing.

If, however, the problem is yourself and (as you say) you waste too much time on the internet, the issue is between keyboard and chair (PEBKAC). You may want to

• engage in more intellectually stimulating activities
• change work/sleep/rest schedule
• start tracking your time
• go home and rethink your life (insert Jedi hand-waving here)

Not sure if this is completely what you want, but K9 Web Protection is a child's (or children's) web filtering and blocking software that is extremely configurable. You could turn off all the settings that you didn't want (filtering, word block, site block, category block), and just use the Internet time feature. You can set what hours of the day you want the Internet on the computer to be blocked, and can customize each day of the week. All settings are accessed via the web browser, and are protected by a password, which you could give to someone else and not know yourself if you wanted to completely block access. It works cross-browsers; one configuration covers Internet Explorer, Firefox, and others all one the same machine.

Make your browser inaccessible from the default (or 'public') account; set up another account where your browser works, and protect that with a password.

You can block and even control internet usage for any users set as guests in Windows XP and Vista a good tutorial on it is here http://www.techhelpcentre.com/showthread.php?p=453489#post453489. As I understand it you can set software restrictions and as far as internet goes you can control what they do on the net not just block it.
