I'm looking for a program like GarageBand for Windows that's free.

Personally, I would recommend free and open-source Audacity. I've been using the 1.3 beta on my Win7 64-bit laptop for quite some time with no problems. It's easy to use, but if you need any help, they have a tutorial wiki.

Audacity running on windows

Audacity hardly looks like it has anything like the functionality of garage band. I have been looking for a free garage band type program for ages and have come up with nothing. I think it does not exist. –  Mick Jan 27 '10 at 12:46
Audacity out of the box doesn't really have a lot that a musician can use, but there are a lot of free add-ons for it that extend its capability. You have to find your own sound clips, though, and that can be tough. Also the UI is more linux-like than apple-like. Lots of power, but you gotta poke around and figure it out. –  robertpateii Sep 24 '10 at 14:17

Jokosher http://www.jokosher.org/

make sure you check out jokosher before you go downloading audacity. I've setup two musicians with audacity and it was indeed a pain. Jokosher looks good from the website and screenshots, but i've never seen it in action. –  robertpateii Sep 24 '10 at 14:21

I know this isn't free, but $40 doesn't seem that bad compared to what some professional audio production software costs.

FL Studio has a free demo; the lack of save functionality is the huge drawback, but you can export your works as audio (mp3, wav, etc). The editor itself has far more functionality than garageband, so it's worth a shot.

I would love to have GarageBand on Windows, but I've been using Trackers for a while.

Check out Renoise, they have a free demo and it's $80. Quite powerful but is more of a tracker.
