is there an existing app or some legal 'hack' that allows you to install a terminal (preferably bash) on the iphone?

bash isn't a terminal - it's a shell. What is it you actually want to do? – Michael Kohne Jan 8 '10 at 17:36

Without Jailbreaking there is no way to install an app like this. Apple simply will not allow such things onto the appstore.

And, FYI, jailbreaking is not illegal - it just breaks the terms of your warranty with Apple.

humor me for a moment then... is jailbreaking in any way 'dangerous' if I were to be moderately careful? ie, under normal usage, could I damage my iphone beyond repair? Also, if I were to revert to a non-jailbroken state, would that undo the voiding of my warranty? (that is to say, would apple be able to find out) – mechko Jan 8 '10 at 13:04

There is an app called TouchTerm Pro, which you can get in the app store: http://www.jbrink.net/touchterm/tt_pro.html

A bit pricey, but it works well for SSH'ing to remote servers.
