For any company, there is often a community around it. Sometimes these communities get interesting bits of information before the news is released to the general public.

For example, the new OCZ Vertex Turbo was described and detailed before the official announcement at http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=402938

And I am talking about computer related products and companies only.

What other communities are there?

This should probably be a community wiki. – scheibk Jul 20 '09 at 17:47

It depends, In reality it's hard for Pre-release information to be trusted. However, you'll find places like Engadget will report on these rumours. Macrumors.com summarises the trusted rumour sources and are often, eventually, proved right.

Subscribing to blogs, especially of people in the know, is also a good idea. If your interested in programming than Scott Gu, Phil Haack and other Microsoft staff often post previews of what they are working on. Although it's usually kinda of public knowledge then.

The best thing is too just check loads of different technological sites, once one places 'breaks' some news the rest will follow.

For anything closely or remotely Apple-related, Macrumors is indeed a great news/rumour site. – Jonik Aug 3 '09 at 21:08

News aggregators like reddit etc. often find these things quite quickly too, although the best way is to just keep up with plenty of RSS feeds, with a good aggregator such as Google Reader, this way you get to tailor your aggregated feeds more closely to your tastes, keeping up with blogs, news site such as engadget etc.

In addition to Engadget, Gizmodo is a place that reports on well-known secrets (and hoax leaks).
