  • Commenting because I don't know the actual answer, but you need to configure X11 to see all four monitors as one large display. The maximize button will then work as you want it to.

  • I can't remember what its called but it should be something like xinerama or something that makes multiple screens look like a single display. I'd answer but I don't know the exact way to set that up, or if its even supported.

  • And my question is: how do I maximise into a single window? :-). I attached an external display (HP-ZR2440w) to a ThinkPad 14" (Intel HD Graphics 4400), and used the following command to get, more or less satisfying, an extented display: xrandr --output eDP1 --primary --mode 2560x1440 --pos 0x1440 --rotate normal --output HDMI1 --mode 1920x1200 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --scale 1.333333x1.333333. Each time a maximise a window, it spans across both screens. I want the opposite. Feb 15, 2016 at 18:33
