GNU coreutils (short for the GNU Core Utilities) is a set of essential command-line utilities from the gnu project. It includes versions of many standard Unix commands, such as cat, echo, chmod, cp, dd, ls, etc.
coreutils is widely used by unix-like operating systems, including most Linux distributions. Many of its commands include GNU-specific extensions, but due to its widespread use, it is a de facto standard.
This tag is for questions specific to the GNU versions of the utilities, such as about GNU extensions, or installing the
coreutils package. For help on general usage of Unix commands, see bash or shell, or tags for the particular command you're using.
