Emulators are commonly used for testing new or possibly dangerous software in a "sandbox" environment so if a compromize occurs, it is isolated from the actual system. Another common use is to simplify physical systems by allowing programs built for different systems to run on a single physical system (the host) with many (guest) systems running inside the emulator.
