This happened to me because I connected an external monitor while in stand-by then woke up the macbook. It had multiple spaces on the external monitor (all named Desktop 1) and the dashboard on the main display and couldn't change it. After disconnecting the external monitor, it logged me out and then could not login anymore, even in safe boot. I fixed it ...

My MacBook Pro can boot from USB drives created with UNetbootin from an original Ubuntu iso. If the mac boot-manager still doesn't see it, you might want to consider installing rEFInd. Hope this helps.

It sounds like you want to have two external displays connected to your MacBook Pro which only supports one external display. The only way around this is to install a USB video adapter such as this one. These adapters are relatively expensive and have poor performance, but it is your only option.
