You can mix SATA and SAS on the same controller. I do it sometimes. It works best when you have dedicated drive connections (e.g. 4-lane connectors to a non-oversubscribed backplane or to a 4-disk breakout cable).

From what I understand the card only has 4 sata ports but you can use SAS drives if you have the right connectors (presumably SAS-> sata).
To use more than 4 of either drive you would need to connect a sas expander to the card using a reverse SATA to SFF-8087 breakout cable and then connect the extra drives to the expander

It turned out to be my cables. I was originally using some as-cheap-as-can-be SFF-8484 to 4X SATA cables on eBay, just like these. Then I bought some nice Tripp-Lite cables with the same specifications, and now my HBA detects drives no problem. Moral of the story? It's usually cheap for a reason.
