@Tetsujin I've partial backup but lets be honest: I'm not backing up the entire drive and I'm not buying a new drive just to backup the main drive. This drive had 7000h when it broke. At job I had a Western Digital which is 1 year older and has 11k hours in perfect condition according to S.M.A.R.T stats. My previous computer more than 7 years and not a single problem with Samsung and WD drives. So it's Seagate's fault for selling crap and my fault for not noticing I was buying crap.

The backup is incomplete. There are so many hours of config spent in both windows and linux partitions I'd be willing to pay if there were a way of recovering it all.

comment How to determine what size backup power equipment is needed?
A diesel generator for a laptop, a fan and two bulbs. Seriously? The fan and the light bulbs are not critical. The laptop already has a battery that could run for 4-6h. Instead of a generator, he could plug it to the car 12V socket, or buy a solar charger kit.

comment Can PSU cause my PC to reboot?
@MichaelKjörling Well that's your opinion. You are free to downvote. I'd understand critics if I'd have said something incorrect or misguiding, but I think my answer is perfectly fit for the site and can help other people. BTW, I'm no noob on SO.

@MichaelKjörling I've no time to make the PSU calculations, and I'd rather let the more experienced users to make a proper answer. Other than this, my answer was not intended to be the solution, but a general recommendation, and it is still valid. Do you really think a low quality PSU, even if it fulfills the Wattage budget, can't broke for different reasons?

comment How to create a cross-platform traveler disk with TrueCrypt
@LiuYan刘研 the exFAT support in Linux is very recent. I'm talking about a traveler disk meant to be used in public computers over the world (hotels, internet cafes, etc) where the running OS might be outdated. An Ubuntu installed a year ago for instance wouldn't have support. Also installing drivers in a Windows machine is out of the question.
