I am a happiness miser and senior developer.

Professionally, I use C#, but I actually write more code in Python since most of my work lately is prototyping. Much of my work these days involve large-scale storage and image processing systems.

Outside of work, I mainly use Clojure and Python. I am also what most would probably consider expert-level in C++, C, and Java.

As a note: I give terrible programming advice, so I hope you read this before you read my answers!

If you want to follow my weird irreverent sense of humor, you can try to make sense of my twitter stream: @birryree

comment Download a file from a linux remote server using ssh
Looks like you're on a Windows host, why not just use WinSCP?

comment “No such file or directory”?
Off-topic, but how are you running it? You probably need to do this: chmod +x hldsupdatetool.bin; ./hldsupdatetool.bin

comment Removing MySQL completely on Linux
Your error indicates that mysql was not running on the machine when you tried to connect to it, you could have tried running the server manually by running sudo /etc/init.d/mysqld. As for removing configuration files, apt-get purge should have done that, otherwise try sudo dpkg -P mysql-server or manually remove /etc/mysql/. As for database files, the default Ubuntu install location for them is, I want to say, /var/db, but I don't use Ubuntu so I don't know. Also, you might want to take this to askubuntu.com, which is the StackExchange site for Ubuntu users.

comment Generating RSA keys for a user
ssh-keygen puts public and private keys in a user's $HOME/.ssh directory. Are you generating the key as some other user? The account you're using looks to be using a website file directory as its home.

comment How do I edit a file currently being used by vi?
In Ubuntu Linux, vi and vim are the same program, but one is a symbolic link to the other (and vi actually sets some old vi-style keys I think). The .swp file is a vim thing, and you can see it in /etc/ssh/ by typing ls -a, which will show hidden files. You can delete the swp file, or use an editor like pico/nano.

comment How can I fix a missing MSVCR90.dll file error?
Some plugin/add-on to Excel might be causing this. See if you can start Excel in sale mode by holding down 'ctrl' on the keyboard before starting it: answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/…

comment How can I fix a missing MSVCR90.dll file error?
Is it just Excel or do all the Office apps not work? It's missing the Visual C++ 2008 Runtime, or so it thinks, so something more serious could be happening. A quick experiment would be to install the redistributable yourself: microsoft.com/download/en/… There's also a 64-bit version here: microsoft.com/download/en/… - download whichever one matches your Office version (32-bit or 64-bit).

comment Can I use bash features such as word completion and scrolling in SFTP?
I can get completion using scp provided I have bash-completion/zsh-completion and have configured my SSH client and ssh-add'ed my RSA keys and password to the SSH keychain.

If you're running Windows 7 within Parallels 6, you can you mount the ISO through Parallels, then Windows will see it.

comment Why do some files in Windows not have extensions?
I think in this case it's because they got the idea (a long, long time ago) from how Unix systems structured their layouts (the etc folder for example), and hosts is named the same way (without .txt) in Unix systems. In fact Windows has some influence from the BSD lineage, I think Windows' ftp.exe, if I remember, is pretty much the same as BSD's ftp program.
