@EtanReisner By display locking up, I mean that when I run xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap, the display stops updating for 15-20 seconds. After 15-20 seconds have passed, the display begins updating again. Here is the output of strace: pastebin.com/J7Gxx88G

@EtanReisner 248 lines. I have tried time but it reports 0.02s. That's what makes me think there is some part of X that is consuming most of the run-time. strace reports approximately 0.02s as well.
