comment Managing a single site Linux web server
I would go with that configuration for the moment. No real security reason to do otherwise. You should get you site up and running and then worry about performance issues.

comment Booting with a bunch of “read-only file system” messages
Nothing wrong with lilo. It has a single configuration file, fits within an MBR. GRUB2 is bloated beyond belief.

You have to read a stream before you can test for EOF. Sounds like you have a poorly designed script.

comment Where are variables sourced from in bash/redhat?
If not /etc/profile, could be ~/.bash_profile, ~/.bash_login, or ~/.profile. When you login, bash looks for each of these files in the order shown.

comment exit code 128, what's the reason?
Other than a few exit codes, exit codes are not standardized. Also 0 means success, > 0 means some sort of failure.

comment Scripting: what is the easiest to extact a value in a tag of a XML file?
If xsltproc is on your system, and it probably is as libxslt is on RHEL4, then you can use it and the above stylesheet to output the tag, i.e. xsltproc x.xsl prom.xsl.
