comment How to tell, using a live Linux USB, if a computer is damaged?
Ubuntu comes with memtest baked right in, and you can boot into that rather than linux to do a memory test. Might as well do that too.

Seatbelts man Seatbelts. They're not just for people. The physical inspection is a good start.

superuser.com/questions/733630/… is roughly the same. I also suspect the E stands for embedded

comment Photoshop CS4 on I7 3770 with HD4000 on XP SP3 does not recognize opengl
Seems like a bit of a waste - that's a pretty powerful cpu, and its crippled by an obsolete OS which can barely address 1/8th of the maximum ram you can put on the system. Upgrading to windows 7 or 8 might be a great idea. There's a great chance support for the OS might be dropped by something or other.

0_0. Thats not a 'small bit of rust'. That looks pretty gnarly.

comment can we use unix hardlinks on a mounted windows share?
I think links are a filesystem level thing, and I'm not sure smb would expose it to the client.

comment How to get my USB 3 hard drive working with a USB 2 device
How is the USB 3.0 drive formatted? Larger drives are typically NTFS formatted, and many media players don't support it.

comment Trying to find a video card that's compatible
I'd consider a core 2 duo the lower bound of "worth upgrading" - anandtech.com/show/6670/… with evidence, of course. Then again, I used to run a dumpster diva core 2 duo for about a year and she was ok.

You might be able to find something as recent as a gforce 610 as a oldschool PCI card (Only 2-3 generations old). That said I'm convinced its a bad investment. Hardware eventually dies, and this system is what... hitting a decade?

To an extent, yes. But meh, it took me less time to do that, than to write something that's probably close to a canonical answer, useful for other people

Misplaced bracket. See the first option I mentioned.

Mind if I hugely crop down your question and add system specs that matter? Its just an infodump, and I managed to narrow down your problem with the system specs.
