Keep in mind that if you don't wait for the email to finish sending, there's a chance it will fail and you will probably not notice. For me, at least, I don't send enough emails that the speed win is worth the small chance that I could have an unnoticed failure to send.

The basic answer is lsof. I don't recall if it's installed by default, but it's available via MacPorts if not.

How likely is it that I'm going to get nailed as spam because I don't have a PTR record, my IP changes, etc.?

I still get errors telling me the smtp_url etc. are invalid after following these steps. I found the --enable-smtp option in the comments to shreevatsa.wordpress.com/2007/07/31/… but I could just be barking up the wrong tree.
