I started programming BASIC on an old HP mini as a child in the '70's, and later learned how to patch z80 code into an 8080 assembler on an Epson QX-10. I finally got out of my Arts degree program to get a BA in CS, and have eventually become an old UNIX guy working on Linux network drivers.

To keep the cost even lower, the satellite computers can run VNC on Linux and not pay for the extra Windows licenses.

comment qemu - fastest user-mode emulation platform?
This sounds like you're going to run a Linux qemu VM in a Linux container on a Linux-based OpenVZ. Is there a reason for the 3 layer approach? This seems excessive.

If the Dr is the only user, the traffic shouldn't be a problem.

Given that it is for a Dr's office, I rather imagine the requirement is to use a specific PC-based health care records application that has little to no way to export data to a web application.

An alternative to Remote Desktop is VNC, which does allow for multiple connections to the same live desktop.

comment test port by telnet command on localhost (OS=windows)?
I assume you're trying to test the HW port - if so, this may not get you what you want. I don't know Windows networking as well as another OS, but the OS will likely short circuit the data path and never actually hit the hardware.

comment How can know driver of TV tuner?
You're right, I missed that. However, I would think that in Windows you can get similar information by going into the Device Manager and looking at the Properties on the device. Or boot up a Linux Live CD on the machine and use the Linux tools to inspect the hardware.

comment Linux vs. BSD. Decide for Me
The recent versions of VMware Player (3.x) will build VMs for you, so it's even easier, no 3rd party needed. Works great for running Win on Linux or Linux on Win. With a whole empty disk, I'd make it a Win7 volume for storing VMs and give your VMs lots of space.

comment wifi connection for laptop 1 mile away
Cat6 is also spec'd for 100m, but you can do 10GB data rates rather than 1GB. Some fiber optics (single mode) will do long distances - just don't leave it lying on the ground where someone can run over it while delivering the newspaper.

Since Cat5e is spec'd at 100m max, getting a mile of lan cable to work might be challenging.

comment My computer makes weird sounds that you can only hear through a speaker
That sounds like your guitar is picking up EMI from your computer, perhaps from your graphics adapter? In any case, yes guitars can be sensitive to "noisy" electronics. You might notice fluorescent lights and dimmed lights doing the same thing. Talk to a guitar tech about adding better grounding and copper shielding to the electronics inside your guitar.

@typoknig :-) I didn't say it would work well, but it is possible to get a guitar signal to come out the computer speakers...

comment Audio cable “joiner”?
Careful - this doesn't always give very good results. As Ignacio mentioned, the signal (current) from one device can mess with the other, giving anywhere from messed up sound to messed up devices.

comment Do any of the HP printers have implement printer sharing?
Perhaps I misunderstood the question - I was interpreting this as not needing to install the drivers because they often are already installed for common printers. Also, the original question is for wired ports, not wireless.

More information is necessary: what does the computer have to do with your guitar amp? Are you using the computer as a guitar amp?

For that kind of setup, I use a mixer similar to this: amazon.com/Behringer-802-Xenyx-Standard/dp/B000JFY1Z6 which allows me to connect a couple of different inputs, including a keyboard and guitar through a small amp and speakers.

The current VMPlayer 3.x works very nicely on Linux.
