comment How to change DPI of a PNG file? (in command line, without ImageMagick)
Unfortunately I am not at liberty to do that, but you can do the same by reading a (great!) specification of PNG file format and making an app that changes the pHYs chunk. It really is simple once you know what you are doing.

Thanks, looks great and will probably come handy in the future! In this case I ended up studying PNG format (which was fortunately simple enough) and changing the images through a small custom app (15 lines in PHP).

I couldn't make it work with option 2, but I have found a way to solve this issue for me (I have updated the question with the answer). Thanks!

Actually I like the idea of automated fsck (computer is better at remembering to run it), I just want to opt-out now and then (when it is inconvenient). Thanks for the suggestions though, they might help someone else.

comment How do I get different background images on my dual monitors?
The easiest way to construct such background is to print "PrtScr" and paste the screenshot in your favorite graphical editing software (Gimp, Photoshop,...). Then you just set this image as background (so you see which monitor is no left/right and edit it to suit your taste.

Yes, but my question specifically stated "I do not know in advance"... ;) Still, thanks for the answer. The reason for the reply was that most of the questions I have found had the same kind of answers - none of which fit my bill. I appreciate the effort though.
