I should have said I have already tried those steps. There are no reminders in Hotmail calendar, and I have uninstalled and reinstalled the connector. Outlook did not crash when the connector was removed.

The engineer had my laptop in a thousand pieces to replace the motherboard. Seems to be working fine now. I'll mark this as the answer to close this question.

That would probably be a good approach, but I think the actual hardware has failed. Engineer due today some time so I'll let you know.
