comment Outlook crash when Outlook Connectors Hotmail reminders appear
I should have said I have already tried those steps. There are no reminders in Hotmail calendar, and I have uninstalled and reinstalled the connector. Outlook did not crash when the connector was removed.

comment How do I get my network adaptor back? Claims unplugged when plugged in, and says “safe to remove” when I unplug the cable
The engineer had my laptop in a thousand pieces to replace the motherboard. Seems to be working fine now. I'll mark this as the answer to close this question.

That would probably be a good approach, but I think the actual hardware has failed. Engineer due today some time so I'll let you know.

comment What Windows virtual machine (VM) software for a development environment?
Very good point about the graphics support in VMs. I suspect the boot from VHD is a boon for that sort of thing. Not sure though, I've not done it yet.

comment What Windows virtual machine (VM) software for a development environment?
Very valid point; virtualisation was switched off in the BIOS and I had to enable it in order to get 64-bit support in the VM. I've heard good things about booting from virtual hard drives (VHDs), but VirtualBox has ticked all my boxes so far.

Yes, I have tried it now at last. I was impressed that I managed to install 64 bit Windows 7 on a VM running on the same (Windows 7 64 bit). I like how it switches between host and VM; it's very nicely designed, and the dynamic drive size is excellent as well.

comment Is there a way to export Microsoft Messenger custom emoticons?
Slightly quirky interface, and a little unsettling to enter my unique passport ID, but ? explains why (that ID is used as a key for the encryption). Export has worked. I assume restore will, but will return here if it doesn't.

For anyone reading this, the Sun VirtualBox user manual has a superb introduction to Virtual Machines, what they are and what they do for you. Still reading but sufficiently impressed to come back and let everyone know about it.

I'm going to give VirtualBox a go. Ticks my "open-source/free" box and looks like it's simple enough to get started with without needing to make a career move to IT from IS.

comment How do I tell Windows to use 802.11 in preference to 3G?
You should call that the "Internet properties". You can access that via the Tools menu from IE, but it's also in control panel, and can be opened from the "Change proxy settings" button in the "Under the hood" tabe of Google Chrome Options. Other browsers will probably also have ways to open the "Internet properties". :)

Could you produce one of these ZIP files (with dummy content) and put it on a server for us to download and inspect?
