comment confused about file owner in linux
Of course, only root (I'm pretty sure) can chown a file's group to something the user's not in.

comment Ubuntu server - “chmod 644 -R” / as root
N.b. there's no reason to use ./, it just makes it easy to make a mistake. If you want to act on the current directory, just use .. There are very, very few times the trailing / is necessary (and, as you have found, it can lead to trouble).

Can you reboot? If you can boot into recovery mode you can get a root shell (busybox, most commands built-in) and re-chmod /. The good(-ish) news is that since / was the first thing to be chmodded, chmod couldn't reach any of the other files, so they should be untouched (from their 777 state, and you can see my link above to deal with that).

comment Hotkey for switching between tabs / window panes on a Mac
You can tab to the bar and use the arrow keys to select the tab you want (hit space or wait a second and it will swap to it). Other than that, I have found OSX terribly lacking in keyboard shortcut possibilities.

comment Why is grep faster than ack
Probably because grep has 30+ years of optimization behind it and ack, well, doesn't.
