comment Which DLLs included in Windows contain icons?
It is on my VM with Windows 3.1, so it has been around at least since then.

I guess it is CW because the question has more than 15 answers. When you posted this answer, because it is the 15th, the question and all of the answers were marked CW.

comment Shutdown Windows 8
On my machine, there are four options that begin with 'S': Shut down, Switch user, Sign out, and Sleep. Unfortunately, that means typing 'S' will result in the next option that begins with 'S' being selected. Perhaps MS should change the names to Log out and change user; They probably weren't thinking about people who use keyboards when they picked those names.

comment Only three primary partitions?
The first partition is the System partition, the second contains Windows 7, and the last contains data. The new partition is third on the disk.

comment Battery stops charging at 84% and gets very hot
@FiascoLabs Interesting. If one cell in the stack is bad, the maximum possible percentage would be 88%. I am thinking that is probably what is wrong. Could you post that as an answer?

comment Computer not booting past motherboard manufacturer logo
Can you edit the bios to not show the manufacturer logo? If so, it will probably show detailed output, which should make it a lot easier to track down the source of the problem.

comment “high security” software wants to turn my Windows PC into a single-tasking appliance
When Explorer.exe runs, if there are no other instances running, then it will show the taskbar and desktop icons. If there are other instances, it will open a folder window.

comment Windows 8 reboot causes an infinite loop
The problem occurs on reboot every time the /f switch is not used, but it never occurs if the /f switch is used. shutdown /s works correctly without the /f switch. Only reboots are affected.

comment Windows 8 reboot causes an infinite loop
I already have a batch file called reboot.bat with those arguments. I was hoping to set the default arguments in the registry so that when programs (e.g. Windows Update) decide I need to reboot, the machine does not end up stuck in an infinite loop in case I forget to cancel the reboot and enter the command manually.

comment Install Windows XP on a removable hard drive
True, but the article does mention that "it works equally well with older versions of Windows". A Microsoft TechNet Library article says "Although ImageX cannot mount an image from a computer running any other operating system, it can capture and apply images for any version of Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, and Windows 2000 Professional."

I don't have an XP install disk anymore. I just remember that Windows 2000 and later can be installed from a wim file.

@Moab - XP can be installed from a wim file, if you have one. It may not be included on the installation disk though.
