In 1972 my 7th-grade math teacher set up a modem in his classroom closet. (This was a 300 baud Acoustic Coupler Modem where you dialed the number on a regular phone and then placed the handset on some cushioned cups.) My friend Eric Swenson and I would come in after school and dial in to Carleton College's VAX machine and play Star Trek. I also played a Crystal Caverns type game that gave me recurring nightmares...
