comment How is PNG lossless given that it has a Compression parameter?
@Dan Neely Good idea, thanks.

Well, it wasn't exactly a complaint, but I'll upvote your answer too. :)

I'm not sure which part(s) of this answer people are intending to upvote, but @LordNeckbeard wrote all the ffmpeg-related stuff (an unusually large edit). Unfortunately, it seems SE currently doesn't allow donating rep to another user, so my thanks will have to suffice in the meantime.

comment Have TELNET, SSH and FTP access but can't connect through Windows Explorer
I'm pretty sure Windows Explorer doesn't support connecting to anything using these protocols by default. You probably had some other software installed, and maybe it broke. You'll need to provide more details for anyone to be able to help.

@Ramhound Just because you "can" doesn't mean you should.

comment Does Microsoft still have a link to download IE10 for Windows 7?
I searched for "internet explorer 10 offline installer" or something like that. I don't think MS really intends to make IE 10 available anymore, so they probably took down any landing pages.

comment regex not working as expected in grep
There are a bunch of different regex dialects. grep -E and JavaScript (regexr's dialect, from a quick look) don't use the exact same one, so you can only use the regexr output as a starting point.

comment Adding permissions back to the Windows SYSTEM user
This is actually a laptop hard drive, so it's not terribly convenient to remove and I'd need extra hardware to have two drives connected. I might try a Linux-based recovery CD first, but your advice may be helpful for someone else.

comment Adding permissions back to the Windows SYSTEM user
It seems I can't take ownership. An attempt at that also hangs for a while before giving an error message about permissions. I can't open a command prompt as admin either; it doesn't seem like UAC works anymore. Even after booting to recovery, "refreshing" the system fails to complete, and going back to a restore point doesn't work either.

comment Run laptop off AC power without charging battery
I suggest being a bit more discriminating in where you paste your comments then. As far as trickle charging, yes, that was poorly worded. More of a topping-off when the voltage drops again.

comment Run laptop off AC power without charging battery
The term "overcharging" does not appear in my answer. We're talking about keeping the battery "fully charged", which most devices will do. This often implies some level of trickle charging, but no one is claiming that the batteries are being "overcharged".

comment Wifi network not showing up on laptop but showing up on phone
Maybe the network is on the 5 GHz band, and your phone supports that, but your laptop doesn't (not too unusual).

comment followup: why are shebang files not suid-able?
It does have to be coordinated. No one wants to write a script that is designed to be run setuid, and then find that a bunch of users can't successfully run it because their particular OS hasn't added support.

Why don't you just stay logged in on the remote server instead of connecting every time?

comment What does errno in fs.lstat err variable means?
Yes, if it's named the same, it's almost certainly relying on the underlying OS and libraries to do the work, at least on Unix-like systems.
