comment Unzip .gz file when line order is important
gzip won't reorder your data, so something else is going wrong in your system.

comment Why do wget and curl fail to download page source?
curl and wget both work fine for me. Maybe you need to specify proxy settings?

comment YouTube video turns black after few seconds
If on a desktop browser, consider upgrading your video drivers and/or try disabling hardware acceleration in your browser settings.

comment Setting up a virtual Com Port?
You might be able to use com0com as one piece of an overall solution, though you'd need a program to provide an interface between the USB and TCP.

comment How did iTunes install itself?
Most likely it's a result of something done by your IT people (maybe they don't even realize it). As such, it's something they need to look into, and not really a question well-suited for this forum.

comment What are the benefits of keeping Caps Lock on after swapping with CTRL?
Kind of depends how often you type in all-caps... I just make Caps Lock an extra Ctrl and remap Scroll Lock to Caps Lock.

comment Is there a way to make tail output newlines?
What OS are you on? Are you using an unusual version of tail?

comment How does google know where I am behind socks proxy?
If you search for "what is my ip" on Google, the search engine itself should tell you what it thinks your IP is. If it's really your IP, then you've probably set up your proxy incorrectly, in which case you should post screenshots of what your network settings are.

comment How to quickly change the first word in a Bash command?
@Mike On the other hand, C-a and M-d are much faster to type if your hands are already in typing position.

comment Ubuntu Server 14.04 stops responding
It's probably a hardware or driver issue. Since hardware is harder to swap in and out, you might try checking for driver updates, or downgrade to an older Linux distro if it's an older machine (newer distros were probably never tested on your older hardware). Also see if there's any optional boards installed that you can remove or whatever. These kinds of problems are always annoying to troubleshoot... good luck.

comment Does Microsoft still have a link to download IE10 for Windows 7?
I searched for "internet explorer 10 offline installer" or something like that. I don't think MS really intends to make IE 10 available anymore, so they probably took down any landing pages.

comment regex not working as expected in grep
There are a bunch of different regex dialects. grep -E and JavaScript (regexr's dialect, from a quick look) don't use the exact same one, so you can only use the regexr output as a starting point.

comment Adding permissions back to the Windows SYSTEM user
This is actually a laptop hard drive, so it's not terribly convenient to remove and I'd need extra hardware to have two drives connected. I might try a Linux-based recovery CD first, but your advice may be helpful for someone else.

comment Adding permissions back to the Windows SYSTEM user
It seems I can't take ownership. An attempt at that also hangs for a while before giving an error message about permissions. I can't open a command prompt as admin either; it doesn't seem like UAC works anymore. Even after booting to recovery, "refreshing" the system fails to complete, and going back to a restore point doesn't work either.

comment Run laptop off AC power without charging battery
I suggest being a bit more discriminating in where you paste your comments then. As far as trickle charging, yes, that was poorly worded. More of a topping-off when the voltage drops again.

comment Run laptop off AC power without charging battery
The term "overcharging" does not appear in my answer. We're talking about keeping the battery "fully charged", which most devices will do. This often implies some level of trickle charging, but no one is claiming that the batteries are being "overcharged".

comment Wifi network not showing up on laptop but showing up on phone
Maybe the network is on the 5 GHz band, and your phone supports that, but your laptop doesn't (not too unusual).
