I'm an electrical engineer that dabbles in programming and IT support for the small automation company I work at.

If you set the colours using the "theme colour" picker (the nice little grid of boxes when you chose a colour) the left column is based on your window colour, and then shaded in different levels. You need to explicitly pick white by clicking "more colours" and using the picker. This is confusing behaviour because the sample colour says "white", not "your window colour"... I changed my window colour to red and the first column is all shades of red and it explicitly says "red" in the tooltip.

comment How to turn a 3D chart into something watchable on a 3D television?
You need a graphics card that can output 3D (like the already-mentioned NVIDIA and 3D vision) and then a program that displays your data in a hardware-accelerated 3D viewport (similar to a video game). Processing (processing.org) might help you out in this regard.

comment Windows XP shut down window very slow to appear
None of these fixes are for the shutdown DIALOG taking a long time to show up, these are all for fixing the actual shutdown PROCESS, after the dialog has appeared and you have chosen to actually shut the computer down.

Are you running firewall software on your PC (the Windows one included)? It might be blocking the DNLA traffic they need to communicate. Try turning it off temporarily and giving it another shot.

comment DVI-D vs. DVI-I: Is the digital video quality any different?
I believe some - but not all - new video cards of the AMD variety (Radeon HD 7970 and similar) only have DVI-D outputs. If you want analog video in the form of a VGA-like signal, you need to use an active Displayport to VGA adapter on them.

comment How to play 24 fps video smoothly on a 60Hz display?
Some of this processing is your video card's responsibility, and some GPUs do far better than others at it. It's part of the standard video tests that Anandtech.com use to review video cards in the context of HTPC usage. Not an answer, I know, but a useful piece of information, I would hope. Check out Anandtech's "Discrete HTPC GPU Shootout" with emphasis on page 6 ( anandtech.com/show/4380/discrete-htpc-gpus-shootout/6 ). I ended up buying a Radeon HD 6570 because of this review and it does a fantastic job - not perfect, but on average better than everything else.

comment Getting gratuitous amounts of soft page faults when loading games and watching flash video
The 1.5x RAM pagefile recommendation is old and out of date, but sidran32's recommendation to put it on a different physical disk is still a good one. What kind of hard drive setup do you have? Are your SATA controller drivers good? What mode is your SATA controller set to in your BIOS? (you generally want AHCI). When was the last time you did a BIOS update?
