I'm an electrical engineer that dabbles in programming and IT support for the small automation company I work at.

comment Compressing a slow drive for performance?
I think the point is here that if you enable compression you have to read LESS DATA off your slow hard drive and then you can use the fast CPU to decompress it. If it takes, say, two minutes to read 100 MB and then 10 seconds to decompress it into 150 MB you've gained time versus taking 3 minutes to read out 150 uncompressed MB.

comment User based BitLocker Drive Encryption
@Starx - to be fair, surfasb is right. Your question is sort of like asking how you can use a bicycle to fly to work. They're both forms of transportation, but they're for accomplishing different things. You can, however, set up EFS inside of a bitlocked drive to prevent unauthorized access to files once the bitlock encryption is unlocked.

comment How can I visualize the file system usage on Windows?
@Svish : I know it's been a while since you posted, but you can adjust WinDirStat's settings to change the look of the ugly boxes at the bottom to something that better suits your tastes.

comment Which .NET Framework install files do I use to have support for everything?
Why on earth isn't this the default configuration, then? I imagine there is something that can go wrong, otherwise Microsoft would simply say "hey, you don't have to goof around with security patches for 2/3/3.5 any more, just install 4 and keep that up to date! Hooray!" This is interesting though, I'll look in to it...

comment How do I remove broken miniport drivers on Windows XP?
Well, Safe Mode allowed me to remove the two Connectify miniports and the MAC Bridge miniport, but the rest remain. I tried reinstalling the Deterministic Network Enhancer as per Citrix's instructions, but they're all still broken and unremovable.

comment Is there any way to determine what program or service is using a device when I try to eject it?
It has added itself to the right-click menu in Windows Explorer on my XP machine. You simply right-click in the drive and choose "Unlocker".
