Check BIOS AHCI options for disk controller. Older operating systems can have problems With some newer hardware, especially sata drives, with AHCI enabled.

I agree with @Ramhound; install ssd with caddy and change the boot order in bios.

No, you primaryly have GRUB. GRUB reads windows's and ubuntu's VBR. Then it loads the selected VBR as secondary boot loader.

comment Failover two ip address and one dns record
The is no "other record" from client perspective, because there is only one MX record. Clients will be trying to connect to that failed wan and fail to connect, try again from the beginning which is name resolution query to DNS server. DNS server handles which answer it'll return.

comment Temporary operating system from floppy disk
As long as you dont mess with the params like partitions and file system of the drive that Windows is installed on, you're ok.. No boot process alters the partitions, exist boot records or file systems.

Why two different subnets? Configure your wireless router to have an IP adress on 1.xxx pool and shut DHCP down on that router. So, wireless router will act like only as an access point and wireless clients will be served with IP addresses from ISP Modem's DHCP server.. All clients will be on the same subnet logically and since your wireless router is not a router any more, they all will be on the same subnet physically.
