comment Go back to original version of Firefox in Ubuntu from beta version
Hey Iain, I have an Ubuntu-installed 3.5.x Firefox, and I really want to go up to 3.6; any idea what changes the Ubuntu team makes that I'll lose if I update it directly?

@alex - google wave is an application; it just happens to be hosted on a website.

How is this "not computer related"? That's just asinine.

I've been looking for a solution for you, but I fear there is no way to read STDIN. Seems like quite a limitation....

comment ubuntu: position of menu icon on the top menubar changes randomly
I have most things locked and they move around all the time. Mostly has to do with changing resolutions, but the changes are not predictable in any way, shape or form.

comment How to turn a Windows XP partition into a VirtualBox virtual machine?
I tried that twice (once via dd and once using the other method) with no luck. Hopefully you have better luck!

comment Multi-machine backup solutions
I can heartily second this recommendation. I have it backing up a mix of Windows and Linux boxes. You mention: "Not pattern to when machines will be switched on." -- BackupPC is especially good here, in that it has the ability to poll for hosts periodically and then give priority to hosts that have been "missing" the longest.

comment In search of a good audio player for Ubuntu 9.10
I spent a few hours this afternoon trying to get VLC to play. I think the problem was a bad skin; I deleted all my preferences and restarted and it worked finally. I found the library management to be a bit lacking for my tastes, and I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to get FreeDB to work. I just gave up :(
