I've been looking for a solution for you, but I fear there is no way to read STDIN. Seems like quite a limitation....

comment ubuntu: position of menu icon on the top menubar changes randomly
I have most things locked and they move around all the time. Mostly has to do with changing resolutions, but the changes are not predictable in any way, shape or form.

comment How to turn a Windows XP partition into a VirtualBox virtual machine?
I tried that twice (once via dd and once using the other method) with no luck. Hopefully you have better luck!

I can heartily second this recommendation. I have it backing up a mix of Windows and Linux boxes. You mention: "Not pattern to when machines will be switched on." -- BackupPC is especially good here, in that it has the ability to poll for hosts periodically and then give priority to hosts that have been "missing" the longest.

I spent a few hours this afternoon trying to get VLC to play. I think the problem was a bad skin; I deleted all my preferences and restarted and it worked finally. I found the library management to be a bit lacking for my tastes, and I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to get FreeDB to work. I just gave up :(

At least I won't delete the whole thread -- my sanity thanks you!

Not as robust as I'd hoped for, and it has some really annoying quirks to it, but it seems to be the best out there so far. Thanks!

I'm going to keep plugging away at VLC, because it seems to be exactly what I want. But I can hardly get the thing to work at all....thanks for the tip, though. I'm not sure why I discounted it initially.

comment Thunderbird 3.0 - how to prevent new message indicator from clearing?
I don't understand why that would help in my case. I tried it, mind you, but it didn't help at all. Thanks for trying, though.
