comment VirtualBox 64-bit guest
@Ramhound Ah! the relevant setting is the version 'Ubuntu (64 bit)' when creating the VM, I hadn't noticed because it defaulted to plain 'Ubuntu' based on the VM name. Works now, thanks!

comment What do the color changes on the Chrome tools button mean?
@moobot I've never caught them in the act of changing color but they are different colors depending on which webpage I'm looking at, e.g. they are orange right now.

Ah, with the new address it works now. Thanks very much!

I've tried changing it to bridged and rebooting the virtual box and ping from Windows to Linux still times out. There is an associated setting for promiscuous mode which defaults to deny. Might it help if I switch that to allow? Can that be done without compromising security of the host system?

Ping from Linux to Windows works fine. VirtualBox network setting is the default, NAT.

No, ping 10.0.2.15 from Windows times out.

It seems sshd is running, there are no firewall rules, and the netstat output contains lines with 0.0.0.0:22 and :::22 before the word LISTEN, so that all checks out?

Okay I've installed Putty and openssh-server and rebooted the virtual machine, ifconfig says inet addr:10.0.2.15 and I'm trying to connect to that with SSH on port 22, but the connection times out. What am I missing?

Ah, the moderation here is no better than on the other stack exchange sites, understood. Thanks anyway!

comment Is there a touch mouse which uses tap to click?
My mention of the Microsoft Touch Mouse was not a recommendation - precisely the reverse in fact. It's hard to tell from the video of the Logitech mouse, but after watching the relevant section a dozen or so times my best guess would be that the user is pressing mechanical buttons; Michele Sganga's comment appears to confirm this; am I missing something?

comment Touch mice and clicks without mechanical force
And sadly they lied; the useless extra features for making windows dance around the place work with touch, but left and right click don't.

comment Touchpad click instead of movement
@MrLister, not that I can see; it's a desktop machine, so the trackpad is just something I bought separately, not built in, and the mouse/pointing device entries in control panel/device manager don't seem to have anything; am I missing something?

I don't know, that's why I tried asking here, hoping somebody would have some idea :)

Yeah, but there must be an answer to which is more common, at least; it would be an unlikely coincidence if they were precisely equally common.

Unfortunately it keeps reloading even after the page has successfully loaded :-(

comment How to keep refreshing a page until it loads?
I tried this, but it ends up refreshing when the page has successfully loaded and not when it hasn't, which is the reverse of the desired behavior :-(

No such key on my machine, but a Google search suggests WaitToKillServiceTimeout is the equivalent on Vista, so I'm trying that instead.

Windows or Linux. (Though I would normally expect a utility like that, that doesn't need to do any platform specific stuff, to be cross-platform or at least easily portable.)
