comment Excel - keyboard shortcut to double click on format painter
@CharlieRB Recording a macro didn't help. I think the macro recorder copies writes code to apply the formatting once you do so, while clicking on format painter in anticipation of applying formatting doesn't register any written VBA code.

comment Is there a way to record macros to do things I would normally do in Windows explorer? E.g. Open an Excel file read-only?
One more tweak: The macro as is doesn't handle filenames/folders with spaces. This I believe is better: Send, excel{SPACE}/r{SPACE}"%clipboard%"{Enter}

This worked for me: "Send, excel{SPACE}/r{SPACE}%clipboard%{Enter}"!!!

ExcelFileName := %clipboard% ; plaintext is giving me an error message so far (though I'm quite new to ahk). I'm checking this out now: autohotkey.com/board/topic/…

Can you elaborate on "which you could then dump into the AHK script as ExcelFileName"?

I'm going to try edit 1 before edit 2, just because I'd rather not lose something I may have copied before opening the excel file.

Thanks this is a great start! I really want to be able to open any Excel file as read only, and would need the script to recognize what file I've selected in Windows Explorer (is highlighted blue) and what folder it's in.

Because that option doesn't work and hasn't been fixed. (Try it out.)

comment VBA code to change the selection of a drop down list (combo box)?
@Raystafarian I have a different spreadsheet where if the user clicks a button and a bunch of conditions exist it will change the drop-down selection to reflect visually that something happened in VBA.

comment VBA code to change the selection of a drop down list (combo box)?
@Raystafarian I just made a new spreadsheet with a combo box, referencing 3 cells for selections options "1","2","3", and tried recording a macro of me changing my selection. And no code was recorded.

@Raystafarian I googled a bunch and found details about changing the data validation, but didn't see anything about changing my selection.

comment Is there a way to include “workbook” event functions in my personal macros file?
Very interesting! Though I have other macros in the workbook that I'd like other users to use as well...

@RubberDuck But I only want it to beep for me, not for other users who open and save the spreadsheet.

@RubberDuck really just make it beep. I want to know when a (sometimes) long calculation is finished. This particular event function doesn't work from my personal workbook.

comment Can I get Copy and Paste to note transpose, exactly as happens in Cut and Paste?
@Madball73 Yeah, that's what I've been doing. I wish there was an easier way.

comment Can I make Excel beep when a calculation is finished?
@techie007 I'm using formulas. I'll press F9 after a bunch of work and have to wait.

@techie007 not VBA. Just functions in large Excel spreadsheets.
