comment How can I check what is my ip on any particular endpoint?
It's not exactly a solution but a good enough confirmation that there's no solution :-)

No. I have only one interface. But I have multiple layers of NAT in between this interface and the endpoint, which depend on the endpoint; and I want to see the ip the endpoint is seeing on ANY particular endpoint I choose, not just curlmyip.com. I've tried traceroute but it doesn't show anything outside the LAN (I guess the incoming ICMP replies are being blocked)

comment How can I import a VMDK disk image to an AWS EC2 t2.micro instance on us-east-1e region using an S3 bucket on us-east-1?
Thanks a lot, man! I was cursing the docs and blaming Amazon for their shitty tools and there it was right in front of my eyes after all... [I have to say in my favor that it worked anyway for Ireland (region us-west-1b gave no error: both bucket and instance were ok with it)] Anyway I was having a really hard time trying to wrap my head around it, thank you for 'un-stucking' me :-)

comment Set Volume to NOT delete on termination on AWS EC2 Management Console
my workaround was a little bit convoluted but less expensive: I created an ami image from the instance which created a snapshot I used to launch another instance (using the ami) unsetting "delete volume on termination", and when the instance terminates the volume is still there. If I make a snapshot of this volume I can attach it to a new instance and repeat the whole process (I know it's absurd to do this just to save a few bucks, but I guess tinkering with AWS is the best way to learn to use them...)

It seems this link explains how to do what I want: scn.sap.com/community/developer-center/hana/blog/2013/06/23/…

@Flup I forgot: dmesg|grep oom shows nothing.

comment segfaults while compiling VLC on low memory system
@Hennes the segfaults are random, the lines leading to it are all cc somemodule and the compiler displays a message saying it's a segfault and it cannot trace the problem and it must be SO related. echo 2 > /proc/cpu/alignment didn't help

comment segfaults while compiling VLC on low memory system
I just ran top in another terminal while compiling. Physical memory is almost full but swap is empty during compilation. I finally managed to compile it all just by trying a few times in a row. The whole process took me almost 4 hours, good thing it doesn't need to recompile already compiled modules!
