Unix filesystems make no distinction between "binary" and "non-binary" files; there's no way to tell what type of data is in the file without looking inside it.

The byte is not an SI unit; KB means "kilobel" (granted, a unit you'd never want to use unless you were describing the sound, if any, produced by the Big Bang.)

@Alex: Apple is free to charge for GCC, although I doubt they can legally stop you from redistributing all of Xcode to whoever you want, considering it contains GPL software.
