comment Can a faulty/failing DSL modem cause corrupt downloads?
Unlikely; TCP and the underlying transport layers do error correction. Do you believe you're actually experiencing this?

comment What is effect of CTRL + Z on a unix\Linux application
Ctrl-Z doesn't send a process to the background, it suspends it.

comment Mac Terminal -bash warnings on start
Check the contents of .bash_profile; it's probably got some garbage in it.

comment In what order are startup items processed in OS X Lion/Mountain Lion?
apple.stackexchange.com would be a better choice.

comment better options for screen?
This isn't a programming question, and I voted to close as off topic, but what do you mean your bash shortcuts are gone? Unless you're using your screen meta key in the shortcurts, your shell should work exactly how it does without screen.

comment Why can't I access a particular website even though the server appears to be available
Are you trying to access from a country that censors the internet? Are you behind a badly-configured corporate firewall that silently drops connections instead of hijacking and displaying a "you're not allowed" message?

comment Macports gives “sudo: cannot get working directory” error, then fails
Did you delete the directory you were in from another shell?

comment Are world-readable/writable/executable links in /usr/bin security holes?
A symlink (on a modern filesystem) isn't a text file at all, it's a filesystem-level link (contrast with OS X aliases and Windows shortcuts).

comment How do I figure out which user is behind an IP address?
Nearly any unix command, including finger, which takes a hostname as an argument will work just as well with an IP address. Of course, it's completely useless if the target machine isn't running fingerd, and hardly anyone does these days.

comment how to fix Permission denied on directory in unix?
Is the shell really spelling "permission" wrong, or is this not an actual copy and paste?

comment Is it possible because of low RAM the MotherBoard getting effected?
Having not enough RAM is very unlikely to cause a kernel panic. Having bad RAM, on the other hand, is very likely to do so.

comment How can I copy my Mac's entire hard drive to an external hard drive?
Is there something specific wrong with /bin/dd that's part of a normal OS X install?

comment executing unix code from the terminal
@Tom: browsers generally sandbox javascript so it can't write to the filesystem.

comment executing unix code from the terminal
If you're not on a shared machine, the risk is pretty much 0; to get a malicious executable onto your machine the attacker will have to already have completely pwned you.

comment How do I run this `find` command, but only on non-binary files?
Unix filesystems make no distinction between "binary" and "non-binary" files; there's no way to tell what type of data is in the file without looking inside it.

comment What is the origin of K = 1024?
The byte is not an SI unit; KB means "kilobel" (granted, a unit you'd never want to use unless you were describing the sound, if any, produced by the Big Bang.)

comment Install gcc on OS X Snow Leopard
@Alex: Apple is free to charge for GCC, although I doubt they can legally stop you from redistributing all of Xcode to whoever you want, considering it contains GPL software.
