comment How to install AVG Anti-virus without connecting to the internet first?
This was the wrong solution to my problem, but it's still a valid issue: Current anti-virus needs to be installed before connecting to the internet, so an AV install shouldn't require a connection to the internet to install the first time. Right?

Win98SE :( Hey, I had the disks available, and I only need it for taking notes. No internet, no games, no nothing.

Yes, I see that Win98 isn't supported. I really just want to get the drivers I need to get this thing working, for word processing (I have CDs) and for the USB driver (another install that seems to want to connect to install). After that, it won't be connected to the internet.

comment What version of Linux to install on a laptop?
I thought most Linux distros were lighter weight than Windows! So, even though it was running XP Pro, it's too under-powered for most of the Linux distros out there?

I will do that when I get home tonight. If I recall it has an 20G hard drive, and barely enough memory for WinXP (It originally came with Win98). I will provide more information in the original question, but it will take a couple of hours.

I bought the laptop from work for $25, and it didn't come with any CDs. But I think you're still right. Fortunately, I don't really have anything important on it, and I can still get files off.

Is this different users opening the same document? Or just starting a new document?

My XP tells me to move it to the shared folder, but when I do so, it asks for a username on start up. I don't know what that is. I tried 'Admin' 'Administrator' '<default>' and 'cak' (one of my aliases), but nothing is working. How do I know what my username is? If I move it back to the c:\Pmail directory, it doesn't ask for a username. (I'm the only user on the computer, but I'd like to not always be admin!)
