My best guess is that it has to do with the 'showmatch' option, which issues a beep if a closing bracket/parenthesis is used without a matching opening bracket. For various reasons, some plugins that auto-insert this kind of thing insert the closing bracket first, then adds the opening bracket.

It works for me in Windows. If I go into insert mode and press control-v then type u00ad I get what looks like a version of a dash character. (I can't seem to paste it here.)

How long ago did you compile it? Is it possible the command would be in your shell's history file? Otherwise, yes, you are going to have to recover the configuration options by hand.
