I'm a software developer working on a social-networking site. I work mainly in J2EE, SQL, HTML, JavaScript and CSS. My free time is spent raising a daughter and a son and indoctrinating them in the cult of Lego.

comment default browser
@user44509: I think perhaps you are being a bit picky. You want Chrome as your default browser except for a single use-case, a buggy HTML help file. Chrome, Windows, IE, these are not to blame, it is the third party software which is to blame. Since you can't modify that, modifying Chrome seems like the easiest alternative.

comment Abnormal laptop reboot
I had this problem: superuser.com/questions/2125/lg-r500-notebook-crashing. I solved it by replacing the thermal paste on the video card and buying a notebook cooler. Now it never crashes.

comment Why is autologon in Windows 7 a security risk
@Brendan Long: There are ways to store a "password" on a computer so that it can not be recovered without brute-force attacking it. This is different from the ways that, say, your browser stores passwords for your favourite websites, where the cleartext of the password is needed.

comment Deleting large amount of files in Windows is slow
Is your computer so slow that GUI operations impact disk I/O performance? Or is TotalCommander just incredibly poorly coded? The disk is hundreds or thousands of times slower than the CPU, RAM and Video card. If graphics are slowing down your disk writes you have major issues.

comment Unicode, Unicode Big Endian or UTF-8? What is the difference? Which format is better?
I'm not sure that UTF-8's goal is "conservation" as opposed to backwards-compatibility with ASCII.

comment See history of who all opened a particular file
keeping track of which users opened a file is not necessarily useful for most files or workloads. For example, many computers have only one user, so that user opens all the files and nobody else opens any. Many servers run a process that has its own user accounts (httpd, sql server, etc) and does not use the OS's users accounts; any files it opens are opened by the user account under which the service runs. Also for many computers keeping track of this list will cause a significant impact to performance and disk usage. Your best bet is probably, as scoopdreams suggested, to enable auditing.

comment Korean text display issue
@Ashwin: Start->Control Panel->Display->Appearance You'll see a window which lets you customize the current theme including colours and fonts. Maybe try resetting the theme if you've made any changes to it or installed any custom themes.
