I'm a software developer working on a social-networking site. I work mainly in J2EE, SQL, HTML, JavaScript and CSS. My free time is spent raising a daughter and a son and indoctrinating them in the cult of Lego.

comment Some Unicode fonts not working in Windows 7/Firefox
I've "tediously" deleted every font that was not found on my reference VM and the problem persists in Firefox.

Unfortunately, the Chrome approach using that plugin doesn't work either. From its Chrome-store description: Chrome will use the font settings controlled by this extension when BOTH of the following are true: 1) The web page has declared the language of the content (e.g., by using the HTML lang attribute); and 2) The web page has not specified a font to use.

Sigh. I had wondered at the possibility of a font lying about supporting these glyphs.

The fonts in question are strictly part of Unicode. The setting for non-Unicode doesn't come into play here. Anyway nobody has "Egyptian Hieroglyphics" as their computer language.

That page basically tells you to install fonts. I have already done that.

@brownchild you might have better luck asking for further help on serverfault.

@tchrist yes, so far this does seem limited to SMP scripts. But the SMP scripts do partially work.

@BhathiyaPerera This is not about code. This is about automatic font substitution. When I load this SU question on my workstation, I see little boxes where I should see hieroglyphs. When I load this same page on my VM in the same browser, I see hieroglyphs. But I can tell that the font is installed on my workstation because I can use Firebug to modify this page's DOM and set the font-family; then the font appears.

@BhathiyaPerera I am seeing the same issue with, eg, the Carian script. On my local machine the text doesn't appear unless I edit page and inject the font family. On my VM, in Firefox, it works fine.

I have fonts installed. And I have verified on two different Windows VMs that installing the fonts is normally sufficient to make them work. Something is different about my machine but I don't know where to look to find it.

comment Is it worth cleaning the registry?
@Richard: I was referring to a failed uninstallation, where there is left-over stuff in the registry in places where it affects other programs. Such as file associations, COM object registries, etc. A registry cleaner can find such orphan links and delete them. It's probably the only valid use-case for registry cleaners I can think of. And in the last 10 years I'm not sure I can recall ever needing to fix such a failed uninstall.

comment Display corruption when switching virtual terminals in Linux
This appears to have worked around the problem for now, with the following drawbacks: switching VTs now takes much longer, and the text-mode VTs are using the old character mode instead of the higher-resolution mode they had when mode-setting was on. Oh well....

Yes, it's uninitialized memory, but I've essentially had this problem in Linux since a long time ago, in various forms, and I was hoping there was some workaround that solves this particular case.

@TheElectricMuffin I could use binary drivers, but the reason I bought an AMD card is so that I don't have to...

@KhusenAsoy There is no virtualization, such as Xen or VMWare on my setup.

I am using the stock Fedora install with the free Radeon drivers that ship with it. There are no third-party drivers. And this has been happening to me since at least 2000, back when I used a Voodoo3, so I doubt it's a driver issue.

comment Pin same app multiple times in Windows 7
It clutters the bar mainly because in XP I actually had two task bars, one at the top of the screen and one on the far right edge, and the right-hand one had all my shortcuts. In 7 you can only have one taskbar.

This is a good suggestion but unfortunately for me it clutters the taskbar too much (I miss XP's multiple-taskbar feature).

comment default browser
@user44509: I think perhaps you are being a bit picky. You want Chrome as your default browser except for a single use-case, a buggy HTML help file. Chrome, Windows, IE, these are not to blame, it is the third party software which is to blame. Since you can't modify that, modifying Chrome seems like the easiest alternative.
