comment Share files on external hard disk via router?
@Ƭᴇcʜιᴇ007 Yes my mistake, I misread your comment as "A NAS" as though you were telling him he will need to buy a NAS device for disks, etc. You did in fact just say NAS. Thank you for pointing that out. My apologies.

In my curiosity I looked further at these devices and found a TP Link, if you like that brand and want to keep it across the board for your home, it is about half the price of the one i cited as an example in my answer but does not cite any NAS functionality however: tp-link.com/en/products/details/cat-4759_TL-PS310U.html

@Ƭᴇcʜιᴇ007 No, he does not "need" a NAS. Incorrect information.

comment System No Boot no video after failed BIOS update
Agree with @Ramhound, that warning in red at the bottom is there for good reason. The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) is the very first part a computer runs through in order to actually boot. If this system is damaged, the machine is essentially a brick. Some research is not showing any reversion process or back-up BIOS on this unit. I'm sorry.

comment How to keep OS X server up after booting without user having to sign in?
Is FileVault turned on on this Mac? It sounds to me like it is because an encrypted mac boots to the logon screen first, but the OS isn't running at this point. Since the OS isn't running, the Mac cannot regulate temperature, or monitor other vital systems, and protect itself if it overheats or something. Thus it will only run a few minutes to allow someone the opportunity to log back on, but shuts off to protect itself if no one does. If FileVault is not on, then this is odd behavior.

comment Windows keep spontaneously moving from workspace to workspace in Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks)
If it were happening to me I might try deleting plist files for all affected apps, or even creating a new profile, logging in AS that profile and then using the computer for a day or three to see if the same behavior occurs. If not, move my stuff to the new profile, delete the old one and call it fixed.

Yes it is usually per app, you are correct. Are there any multiple monitors in play here? Or is this a single monitor? How many work spaces (desktops) are in play as well?

comment Can not connect to internet via wifi
Have you rebooted the wifi access point/router to see if that might help? This would be my first attempt at fixing a wonky wifi connection. Do other devices connect and work on the wifi?

comment 10/100Mbps router overwhelmed by Gigabit switch & its devices?
I agree with Frank here. I have a situation almost identical to yours, I installed a Gig switch so I too could increase the transfer speeds between my PC and my Drobo. I use Cat5e as well, and of course only achieve speeds of about 250 - 300 Mbps, but it is still better than 100Mbps. That aside, I do not experience any slow downs out to the web, that traffic should still run at the full speed capable of the router. One thing I might try, since this occured when you installed the switch, try removing it and see if the performance you are used to returns. If not, maybe coincidence with ISP?

comment repair corrupted PDF
I see where you just said it won't load, but do you get an error? Often times on difficult PDFs I find the PDF viewer built into Linux Mint is extremely resilient and can open files that other programs just cant seem to get their heads around. Reprinting it to PDF from Mint makes a clean pdf that the other programs can then use. I do this many times a month for users at my work.

Are all monitors connected and running on each computer? You said not video, so I take away from that and picture a desk with say 3 or 4 monitors on it, all connected to different computers each with its own KB and Mouse under it. Is that the setup we are trying to rectify?

comment remote desktop ubuntu server
Putty will work if all you want to do is see your "console" and have control of the server from the given cli. As far as a full gui, that won't really be possible on a server with no gui.

comment Force screen resolution to its maximum in Windows
@Manu If the answer is no, you need to install them and the proper resolution should appear in your list of options. If the answer is yes then something is wrong and you need to either re-install the drivers of the monitor or the video card in order for it to show in the list. Basically what Lese is saying is if the drivers are installed properly, then the resolution should appear as an option. Lese doesn't seem to think your drivers are installed correctly.

This is not a true multi-monitor environment but if it works for you then that is excellent.

The number of monitors on the work PC is moot, it is running XP and does not support multiple monitor RDP. Please see my answer below.
