also I'm not marking my own answer as accepted because it does not really answer my original question. I'm just adding this as information for anyone else who might see this question while working on troubleshooting their own problem.

yes the monitor is on. although actually that is tricky because it automatically turns off or goes into a standby mode after a few seconds if it does not detect any input. I've tried connecting both before and after boot. But I also tested with a different monitor that someone I work with has. His monitor works with displayport and I still had the same problem.

I know you can run lspci but I don't know if that will show anything about displayport. It does not seem to be for my laptop.

yes I tried but it only detects one screen. This is the case with both Ubuntu and Windows.

comment Does builtin flash player in Google Chrome on Linux x64 work?
Flash does work when I downloaded Flash Player from Adobe and put libflashplayer.so in /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so. But what I'm wondering about is whether the built-in version of the player that Chrome's help page lists libflashplayergc.so works on 64-bit Linux, because it is missing on my system. Also I don't see pepper listed either.
