comment Can someone explain what “video acceleration” is?
"managing the hardware or software of servers, workstations" is listed under what is appropriate. This is a question about the hardware (GPU/CPU) and software (VLC) of a workstation, that includes a query about "Video acceleration" to determine what the best course of action is in dealing with an error message that has to do with the hardware and software of a workstation. Should probably amend that help page to say something else if this isn't the right place.

comment How can I shrink a Logical Volume, and re-allocate the freed space into a new partition on the same drive?
Sorry, it's MBR. I had to look GPT up just now, lol.

comment What are some specific audio / sound card / driver setups that still allow you to “record what you hear”?
But I do thank you for your answer about the audio mixer and virtual audio cable, two things I hadn't even considered before :)

I disagree. You can easily remove my statement that I'm willing to buy something and then it just make it a general question about WHICH sound cards will not give problems for this goal. SuperUser FAQ clearly states this is the place to ask "If you have a question about … computer hardware" --- which this question is exactly that: what pieces of hardware (sound card in this case) will allow me to record what I hear? Further, if you research this topic, you'll find dead-end threads and unresolved issues galore, but never anywhere does someone say, "I have this, this and this, and it works."

But then how can I record microphone at the same time? I'll edit my original question to make that more clear, sorry.

Dang, that looks like an awesome e-mail client! I'd never heard of it before. Too bad it's not free :( This is entirely for work, and for my own organization, so it's not "necessary", and I don't want to spend my own money on it, so... :( Thanks though, nice to know this even exists :)

comment If I purposely lock myself into a Standard User account, am I going to cause problems for myself later?
Thanks for your reply, very helpful. Particularly the bit about the web browser, I suspect that's where 99% of my problems have come from :)
