comment How to dualboot Windows 8 and Linux on HP laptop
I solved it by doing something like this. The SYSTEM partition contains the Windows boot loader, so it shouldn't be touched. GRUB is installed to the first partition created by the Debian installer and setup to chainload the Windows bootloader.

comment where does root (/) mount point exist — linux
The partition containing the root file system with all your files and directories is on your hard drive and this partition is mounted at the directory that is /. It is not mounted into RAM. Whenever a process refers to a file in that file system, a system call is made to the kernel and it will talk to the disk through a low level interface that the disk understands.

comment How to send an `xmessage` as root remotely to regular user logged in with 'x' session?
@PeterSnow Also bear in mind that the X forwarding isn't strictly necessary, it only adds to security of the connection. You should be able to do it with only xhost and exporting DISPLAY to the remote.

comment How to execute command, and if it fails, execute another command and return 1?
The return statement is meaningful only when inside a script or function - not on the command line. Who do you want to return 1 to?

comment Unable to install packages with apt-get
Have you tried doing a apt-get update prior to installing? Have you enabled the repositories containing the packages? Easy way to check enabled repositories is to peek inside /etc/apt/sources.list.

comment Can't add executable file to PATH in Linux
It looks the problem here is that your PATH statements aren't sourced, so you need to make sure you do exactly that: source ~/.bash_profile and then look at echo $PATH.

How did you create the file? What are the permissions of the parent directory and its files in Windows?

comment how do I 'hard refresh' a shared directory?
What are the permissions for the shared directory? Post the output of ls -l parent_of_shared_dir.This can be caused by not having exectute (x) permissions on the shared directory, so you are prevented to display information about the file with ls.
