comment My system powers down when I insert a disk into my drive
This does sound like a power issue like the power supply can't handle the energy draw from the disk drive. That being said, the normal power draw of a working floppy drive is next to nothing. There is the possibility that something failed with the drive and is shorting out. That could cause a sudden increase in voltage draw from the disk. How old is the drive and do you have a known good spare you can swap it with? Depending on what you are doing, you might want to grab a USB disk drive so it doesn't have a direct connection to the power supply.

So what happens when on the win7 machine, you go to start> run and enter in the UNC path for the winXP machine? The UNC name is two back slashes followed by the computer name. Example: \\winxpcomp

comment Restoring open software after a restart event in windows
I've found ways to save browser (use firefox) and folder (windows setting) sessions and have them relaunch on startup. The other things like Office (Word,Excel,Outlook), notepad, and adobe reader I have yet to find a good solution for.

comment Removing a bogus “not genuine” message from XP
With all the invalid keys out there, they could have flagged your CD-key as an invalid one. I would verify product editions to make certain you are installing the correct version for the license. It's a little known fact that there are more versions of XP then Home and Pro. I doubt you have any of those, but you never know.

comment Restoring open software after a restart event in windows
I have thought of that, suspension and hibernation really don't do anything for me. It's not that I want to save energy, it's mainly that I want to get back to my previous work environment after a hard restart.

comment Password protect the boot menu on a desktop computer
If you set a BIOS password and that doesn't protect the boot menu, you can normally set the boot order to only allow your main hard drive. This is of course dependent on the motherboard and what options are allowed. This would only protect against idle attempts to boot alternate media. If the computer is stolen, this measure is easily defeated. All you have to do is use the reset CMOS jumper or remove the battery. Something that take 10 seconds once you gain access to the inside of the machine.
