+1 for nmap. For what OP wants, it's the obvious way to go. You can download it for free from insecure.org.

comment Does UEFI prevent dual-booting/Ubuntu not to recognize Windows 7?
Dual booting on a default uefi system needs some additional steps. I haven't had to do this myself yet, but I would start trying this.

comment Winodws 8/8.1 upgrade - “ Display driver stopped responding and has recovered”
Try monitoring your actually installed driver (right click in device manager) over time: first, after installing firmware driver; then after the error occurs. If you see a different driver, windows auto-"upgraded" your driver. If this is the case, disable this feature (I'm out and about and forgot where exactly; but it's also somewhere in the control panel). That said, I had this with an AW laptop under W7, and could never resolve it myself.

My bad: 6 is numeric, but 5 which you sum too isn't.

Assuming your columns are separated by "|", this can easily be done; but I find it hard to match your goal description to your data: col 6 is not numeric; you also add up col 5, then divide for some mean; and I don't see how your goals produce the 3 col + |'es output at end. Could you try to explain again?

comment How to deal with error “access violation at address 00000000 read of 00000000”
If neither of the above, your OS might have gone bad, and you need to restore/re-install. It could also be an hdd issue, but I doubt it. For safety, you could run chkdsk, but I've had bad experiences with it.

This is almost certainly because of a newly installed program having faulty code/not having installed properly. Uninstall any recent program. If not, if you ran a registry cleaner something might have been wrongly removed - going back a restore point to before might help.

comment Please help me identify this ATI graphics card
If this is a windows system, speccy or gpu-z (both freewares) should detect you gpu specs. I suggest speccy as it is easier to find a download link that doesn't come bundled with adware one needs to carefully refuse during install. Unfortunately, neither has a Linux version (but I think Mac ones).

Thanks for clarifying! I was careless, and will delete the comment; just adding this to not let your correction hang in the air.

comment Prevent Windows 7 from reading bad disk sector and freezing
Agreed, but it's also size-restricted - not even to speak of how long it would take if it weren't. Even the Wikipedia article - flagged as 'reads like a product advertisement' aka, written by Gibson or a fan - mentions that it is restricted to 128/255Gb - not large these days. I own the license, and used to be fan; I just think times have passed it by. If it still works fine for your needs (and maybe OP's), all the better. :)

If there isn't an update to spinrite since the last version I owned (about 4 years back), this will take - at current hd sizes - ages; and isn't even that good for modern hdds. That said, can't hurt, but spinrite isn't what it uses to be (best tool for this).
