comment How much more battery time would I gain by not having any hard drive?
@Ramhound How do you know? actually, this is my question: how to estimate this? I presume it does make a difference because lots of websites recommend using hdparm to enable power save on the hard drive.

@Ramhound: my battery would live longer because it no longer has a hard drive draining power. The USB thing is just to explain how I would boot my computer in the absence of a hard drive, it's irrelevant otherwise.

Why did I get a down vote on that? people pointed out that it was hard to evaluate: does it make my question invalid?

@Claudius I routed the google ip addresses via tun0 but I can’t wget them anymore, so I don’t think this works. see bpaste.net/show/55677

@Claudius: I might be wrong, but I used ping -Itun0 www.google.com to override the gateway, shouldn’t that work? I didn’t want to redirect the default gateway to the tun0 adapter before I was sure it worked (or I wouldn’t be able to talk right now)

@JulianKnight I normally don’t use iptables, I just added the rule to see if it would help. So my first configuration did not use iptables.

@AlanCurry that’s how I ended up fixing it. Please edit an answer and I’ll give you the response point. I had to add parameter -c to the rsync command to enforce checksum.

@Shiki interesting idea. Will the torrent blocks be compared using checksums ? I am afraid the torrent way of checking is size-based (I really have no idea to be honest)
