I make a habit of quoting the string matching in a test case with "" in both the left and right values, it makes it less likely that I would forget "" when you have a string containing spaces, etc.

You know, telling someone they are wrong without explaining and properly correcting is kindof pointless and dumb?

Or well, you are right, the "" in itself doesn't make it a string, you might aswell use: $loop = true but bash still makes difference between strings and integers. Updated the answer slightly.

The quotes makes it work. And = compares strings, compared to (for example) -eq that compares integers. Check Advanced Bash Scripting Guide for more information "Note that integer and string comparison use a different set of operators.": tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/comparison-ops.html

If you want it as a oneliner, just put everything on one line. ;)

comment using John the Ripper to recover RAR password
The reason was simply that rar worked for me in my example, and you said that unrar didn't work for you. unrar should work pretty much the same way, so if you get it to work and won't have to install rar, all good! :) No other reason than that!

comment Keep mplayer open after video playback
I don't have my Linux laptop handy so can't try at the moment, but I really believe its how I had it going in slavemode. A few guesses that I might have used is -fs for fullscreen, and maybe show_videowin set to yes in gui.conf? Hope some of those makes a difference. Another "ugly" workaround is to use the -loop option to just loop the movie a bunch of times, but that might be even more annoying. ;)

comment Server died in power outage - now won't boot
A power cut can break your RAM, PSU and burn pretty much anything in your computer. So yes, very possible. :(
