comment Concatenate a range with a conditional seperator
@ScarletManuka that's a brilliant idea, great lateral thinking. Can't try it out right now but will test it later

More or less yes, it's an unusual request, but that's the requirement of the system it's going to be input into. There's a little more to it than that but each row has to have the whole set, ordered, with that row's item marked with a special character

While the linked duplicate is about Vista and shows a different-looking window, the answer does answer this question.

comment How to make Windows 8.1 recognise/use the inline mic of headphones connected to a dual input
Amazing, three people with RealTek drivers, and they're all completely different... gotta love windows. You seem to have the version with the folder icon that Ben N referred to. Does this popup just appear when you plug anything in? Which is the black icon you refer to - do you mean the strange black circle under "analog"?

comment What Is Minimum And Maximum Processor State In Windows 7 Power Management?
How can I find out what my processor's allowed p-states are? And is there any way to see which one it's running at at any given time? I'd like to know before tweaking the settings if it will actually physically do anything :-)

Just found a really thorough explanation of those settings here which will be useful for anyone like me who hasn't seen them before: What Is Minimum And Maximum Processor State In Windows 7 Power Management? - looks to be same in Windows 8 as Windows 7

Do you mean by setting a lower "Minimum processor state"? (also, while exploring in there, changing the "system cooling policy" looks like it will do some of what I want)

Interesting, not tried that yet, so presumably this means setting a "Maximum processor state" lower than 100% might limit how much heat is generated?
