I've been a computer hobbyist since before the IBM PC, and a professional programmer not too long after that. I've had experience with electronic repair, manufacturing, and testing of professional audio.

I tutored other students in Fortran before PCs existed, built my first computer from bare circuit boards and reject parts (S-100 CP/M system), and transitioned from stereo repair, to professional audio manufacturing at Dolby Labs, where I set up the automated functional testing for Dolby professional equipment. From there, I went into programming full-time as a C programmer for Mac presentation graphics systems, then to Windows C++ video programming. My last 10 years was as a C++ Windows software engineer for a corporate source code control system.

I'm now a Linux user, retired from active work but still helping friends with computer problems, configuration, audio/video setup, and other electronic devices.

comment how to setup a symlink for /var/www on a local server to point at a folder on the host?
Since I don't have a Mac or VMware, I don't think I can post an answer. I would urge you to use a conventional method of keeping the files on the server and accessing them remotely via either ssh or ftp. Many editors support this. You can't directly link to a remote directory, but you could mount it first, using either sshfs or smb (cifs), then link to the mounted directory. Either one is a bit of work to get authentication and permissions working correctly.

Your question is not clear to me. Perhaps if you were to specify what you are actually trying to do, rather than how to implement a possible solution that may not even be correct. Are you trying to put your website files in a different directory (if so, you don't need to use /var/www at all)? Are you trying to link to /var/www from another computer (you could mount it if you wanted)?

comment Is my laptop battery dead?
Sorry about the Notebook Review article - I actually came across it while looking for the Battery University article, which I read a while back, and it looked like it addressed the issue I had read about, which was not to calibrate the battery, but actually to calibrate the computer to the battery characteristics.

@Synetech, yes, that's what I've read, too. They shouldn't be drained completely, but the PC doesn't allow that to happen. For more information, this article says you should recalibrate periodically, as I suggested. Battery University has lots of information about LiON batteries, if anyones really interested.

comment Ubuntu 11.04 “The destination is read-only” - thumbdrive - GNOME error?
Can you create both files and directories from the terminal, and neither from Nautilus? I see the dmask specified but no fmask. But I have no idea why you can do something from terminal but not nautilus, unless you are root in one and yourself in the other (I do see some prompts show you as root).

Sorry, my memory was a little off, and I didn't give the full answer. I added a second edit to my answer. If it makes you feel any better, I don't really see much reason for them, either, and it's especially frustrating that global seems to be the default.

I don't think this is the same. I also think it does matter. You should connect the cord to the unit first, then plug it in to the outlet. Plugging a live cord into the unit is risky, although admittedly there's not much chance of a problem. But there's a right way and a wrong way to do everything, regardless of how much or how little risk there is of doing it wrong. Anyway, I don't see what difference the AC/DC transformation makes; you can shock yourself or cause a short circuit with either one, I know from experience during my electronic repair days long ago.

BTW, be aware that all of your login information is stored in plain text in the filezilla directory of your home directory. This is something I didn't realize when I first started using it.
