There should be three options for you when you click the power button: Restart, Sleep and shutdown. Shutdown works exactly the way its supposed to. Not exactly sure what you are describing there. Sleep works as "hibernate".

no, by app I mean the Emacs app in the Applications folder. I will edit the question but I thought it was clear enough the question wasn't about the Terminal but about Emacs (hence the tags).

Nvm, I installed emacs with x11 using MacPorts. And it does the job. Do you know how I could instead use the Emacs.app to start with emacsclient -c or is that not possible?

thanks for the answer. How do I do that? MacPorts? Do I need to delete Emacs.app or is this going to be something completely different?
