This has a chicken and egg problem: ~/.profile does not exist when ~ is not mounted. Also, processes may need files in ~ while the user is not logged in.

One option is to convert the PDF to PostScript, use some tool to do this with PostScript such as psnup or psresize, then convert back to PDF. This is not guaranteed to work for all possible PDFs.
