I'm not sure if I understand your question, so tell me if this is what you're asking. You have: 1) A collection of books and music in non-digital format. 2) The possibility of digitizing that collection. 3) A website. What you want is an application for your website that: 1) Has users sign up for a one month trial. 2) Lets trial/normal users view your books and music. Did I miss anything?

Yeah, I've had similar problems with songbird in Linux, and launching it with sudo solved them. I don't know if it will work for you, but it's worth a try.
