Well not the same for me, I'm able to go up to 1080p with DVI. What is xrandr telling you?

I asked xorg developers on irc. Basically, the chip in the converter is not able to reach the needed frequencies for high resolution monitors, so they need to use some dithering. There is a proposed patch, but it's not in the mainstream source tree. DVI is ok, though, so I'm using it.

Sorry maybe I misunderstood the meaning of "accepted": I thought I had to accept just the best answer... maybe I need to go back to the help pages. Thank you for pointing out.

I don't like to accept incomplete or not very useful answers, should I just accept the less useless one?

comment Prevent a download to saturate all bandwidth on Linux
I tried wondershaper, too. The issue with it is that you need to know the total up/down bandwidth beforehand to give it as an input, and that's more annoying when an interface is both on the internet and on a lan, so that you can eventually shape all your LAN related traffic on the same bandwidth of your DSL line.

comment xorg DPMS off: keep VT from turning screen back on
Yes, it's a device with an embedded screen. Yes, I used the vbetool to turn off the display immediately after the X server exits, but I need to avoid even the brief flicker which happens, since it's going to drain a lot of power.
